A New Era at 天美传媒: Kim Althoff on Leadership, Legacy, and the Road Ahead
When Kim Althoff officially stepped into her role as 天美传媒鈥檚 new Executive Director, the news came as both a celebration and a natural evolution. After nearly three decades with the association, Althoff鈥檚 appointment marked the continuation of a leadership legacy built on relationships, service, and a steadfast belief in the cleaning industry鈥檚 power.
鈥淚 feel incredibly honored and privileged to step into this role,鈥 Althoff said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been an incredible journey, and I鈥檓 so thankful to the 天美传媒 board, our members, and our amazing team for their trust in me.鈥
天美传媒 beginnings
That gratitude is fitting for someone who began her 天美传媒 journey in 1996鈥攖hanks to a nudge from her father, a longtime manufacturer representative and 天美传媒 member.
鈥淗e called me one day and said, 鈥榃hat about my association鈥斕烀来?鈥欌 she recalled. 鈥淗e knew the people, the energy, the show. He made a call to the convention director, and it turned out they were looking for an administrative assistant in the trade show department.鈥
Her father even flew in to take her to the interview. 鈥淚 told him, 鈥楧ad, I think I鈥檓 old enough to go on my own,鈥 but he insisted,鈥 she said. 鈥淗e said he knew the executive director, John Garfinkel, and some others, and just wanted to help.鈥
That interview became the start of a remarkable career. Althoff joined 天美传媒 as an administrative assistant, learning every aspect of the trade show business and steadily taking on new responsibilities across the departments of media, education, events, membership, and philanthropy. 鈥淗ard work has always been a family motto,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been fortunate to work with incredible mentors and to keep growing as our industry has evolved.鈥
Learning from leaders of the past
Althoff鈥檚 perspective on leadership has been shaped by those who came before her. Over the years, she worked closely with three of the four past executive directors鈥擩ack Ramalay, John Garfinkel, and John Barrett.
鈥淛ack was synonymous with kindness and relationships,鈥 she said. 鈥淛ohn Garfinkel was a strong industry veteran who made me a better professional. And John Barrett鈥攈e鈥檚 one of the kindest, smartest people I鈥檝e ever met. He鈥檚 been a mentor, a friend, and someone who truly believed in the people of 天美传媒.鈥
Althoff credited Barrett鈥檚 foresight for positioning the association for success. 鈥淏efore COVID, John led the decision to partner and sell the trade show, which gave 天美传媒 the resources to reinvest in our community,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 also when we brought in GBAC (the Global Biorisk Advisory Council)鈥攋ust before the pandemic hit. That move proved invaluable to our members and the entire cleaning world.鈥
A foundation built on people
While Althoff鈥檚 story is personal, it鈥檚 also deeply tied to the people who make up 天美传媒. 鈥淲e have such a talented and tenured group,鈥 she said. 鈥淢any have been here 20, 25, even 30 years. That continuity is a big part of our strength.鈥
She sees her role as both leader and listener. 鈥淥ur members are at the center of everything,鈥 she emphasized. 鈥淲e鈥檙e rolling out a new five-year strategy beginning in January, and it starts with listening鈥攖own halls, conversations, and building partnerships that make us all stronger together.鈥
That philosophy of connection also extends to 天美传媒 Charities, through which Althoff helped oversee initiatives, such as聽Cleaning for a Reason聽and聽the Hygieia Network. She also recently attended the inaugural聽Golfing for a Reason聽event in California.
鈥淓veryone came out to support a good cause, and that鈥檚 what this industry is all about鈥攃oming together for something bigger than ourselves,鈥 she said.
Staying curious, staying kind
As she looks ahead, Althoff鈥檚 priorities revolve around innovation, inclusivity, and impact.
鈥淪tay curious, stay kind, and keep moving forward,鈥 she advised. 鈥淐uriosity drives learning, and there鈥檚 so much for our members to explore鈥攏ew technologies, training, and ways to grow their business. Kindness keeps our culture strong. And moving forward means embracing change, even when it鈥檚 uncomfortable.鈥
This includes helping members navigate emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI). 鈥淓veryone鈥檚 talking about artificial intelligence,鈥 she said. 鈥淪ome people aren鈥檛 sure what it means or how it helps. Our job as an association is to be the place members can turn to for clarity, support, and real solutions.鈥
Althoff鈥檚 optimism is grounded in pride for the industry in which she grew up.
鈥淢y father used to say people don鈥檛 give this industry enough credit鈥攊t鈥檚 a pretty amazing business,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 fully understand that until I saw it firsthand. The innovation, the dedication, the people鈥攊t鈥檚 inspiring.鈥
Her message to the community
To members and prospective members alike, Althoff鈥檚 message is simple: 鈥淕et involved. Learn more. Join us.鈥
She believes the industry鈥檚 best days are ahead. 鈥淭his is a community of passionate, hardworking people making a real difference every day,鈥聽she said. 鈥淭ogether, we鈥檒l continue to elevate standards, strengthen relationships, and show the world just how impactful the cleaning and facility solutions industry truly is.鈥
